We had a great day in New Orleans. We took a fun carriage ride through the French Quarter and surrounding areas and our driver told us lots of history and facts about the area with lots of commentary. We particularly liked to see the great Creole style houses. We wandered through the French Quarter on our own and down Bourbon Street. It was wierd to see all the voodoo stuff and other macabre items in the shops. The French Quarter is on the Mississippi River with it's river boats and lots of shipping activity. We rode the trolley up and down New Orleans to site see and then got off at the National WWII Museum. It is an excellent museum, and was very educational and humbling. We also enjoyed all the tastes of New Orleans from gumbo and shrimp creole to beignets (popular French donuts).

Was this your first time in New Orleans? I've been there just once. It was great, but I feel no need to go again. Like you I found the history and the architecture to be interesting, but the entire atmosphere left a lot to be desired!
