Galveston is right on the Gulf of Mexico and is well known most recently for the devastation that occurred when the hurricane "Ike" hit the area last fall. There are signs of the aftermath of the hurricane everywhere, especially in the harbor area. We were eating at a restaurant in the harbor area and the hostess there was telling us that the water on the second floor reached six feet----it was a 15 foot storm surge and all along the waterfront area everything was seriously damaged. We were able to watch the tall ship "Elissa" dock. We drove along the sea wall on the ocean side and one can see that this area is always prepared for that next hurricane. The buildings and houses are very unique. Kind of like what I picture they would look like in the New Orleans area and many have REAL shutters on their windows. Tomorrow we are off to the Big Easy---New Orleans.
